2017 Birthday Project Poll

Hello everyone,
We are very excited to start our campaign next week in support of Planned Parenthood. Every year we love when the fandom comes together and supports a cause to honor Kristen for her birthday. Every year though, we run into complaints from fans who are not happy with the chosen charity. Every year there are fans who decide they don’t want to participate because they feel we should have selected their chosen charity. This is not the spirit of what we are doing. Everyone is free to donate whatever amount to whatever charity they choose on any given day. However, we want to emphasize that this project is for her fans to honor Kristen. It is really not about what you want, but about her. We hope that everyone keeps this in mind over the next 5 weeks. We have had a lot of success over these past years and we hope that continues.

Now, that said, there is a lot of divisiveness happening with the project this year due to the chosen charity. In past years, we just move on and hope everyone comes around and supports the charity anyway. However, this year we understand that this is a charity that some people just cannot support due to their beliefs. We ask that you please respect their opinions and beliefs and not make them feel ostracized from the community. With this understanding and knowing that these fans also want to contribute to honor Kristen for her birthday, we will put together a second drive. Doing this, more people around the world will benefit from our help. Below we have the poll for these charities. Once again, please do not vote in the poll unless you plan on helping out with this one. Please note, there are notable charities missing from this poll. Since we are unsure about the level of participation, we have to keep it as low maintenance as possible. For example, with a charity like Women in Film, either they would, or we would have to hire a third party to run the drive which takes away money and resources. So the organizations listed in the poll below have the ability to create team pages on their websites. This poll will be open through Saturday, March 4th.

Our organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and are proud to boast more than 2 million supporters across the country.

Alzheimer’s Association

The Alzheimer’s Association works on a global, national and local level to provide care and support for all those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Susan G Komen

Susan G. Komen is the ONLY organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease.

Build On

buildOn’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education.
We are breaking the cycle every day through service learning programs in some of the nation’s toughest high schools and by building schools in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Thanks for participating!

  1. We know, we just threw the poll up last night and have not fully updated the site yet. We will do that when we choose an organization.

  2. I would have loved to see this cause as well. Such a life changing cause and a little $ goes a long way! Oh, well. Maybe next year.

  3. Marina says:

Why can’t we do something for refugees or muslims? Especially since Kristen has been vocal about speaking against prejudice against them in the past.

  4. Marina says:

Also, how about something like an organization that helps with the Flint water crisis? It’s a very relevant (and ignored) issue today and the people in Flint still need our help. Kristen has presented at the Thirst gala before too. Also, she has spoken out for New Orleans & how people there are still suffering – I think the Flint water crisis is an example of an American population suffering with little to no media attention or empathy.

  5. Nin says:

No, she will be 27 this year:)

  6. Mac says:

While supporting an organization like Planned Parenthood is worthwhile, it’s too political. Some people are against that particular agency. While supporting an organization fighting breast cancer or Alzheimer’s touch more people personally, and are less political.

    • We have other organizations listed under that category and could expand into more organizations as we get suggestions. Right now we are just voting for the main issue. Others have complained that PP isn’t global and would like something to help around the world, so we found this organization and here is their latest mission:

If helping Women wins, we will most likely throw in Breast Cancer research since it is mostly geared towards women.

We already did Alzheimer’s two years in a row and we are getting the sense that fans want to help a different cause this year. But no matter what any of our personal opinions are, it will come down to what the majority of fans want. If in the end PP wins, we can discuss having an alternative for those who refuse to contribute to that organization for political reasons.

      Thanks for your input. 🙂

    • Maxie says:

I totally agree – I’ve contributed $400 each year for the past 3 years of this project. And while I am appreciative of all the time and effort these fans put into this project every year, I will have to sit out this one if Planned Parenthood is chosen – just too political, and not something I can support.

      • We will have a second charity for those who have issues with a political charity if chosen. As stated under the poll:
*We understand that some of these charities may not be doable for some due to political/religious beliefs. If we get enough response shall one of these charities wins the poll, we will set up a second charity fundraiser so that everyone can participate.

  7. Judy Blue says:

    ACLU donation in her name

  8. Rain says:

can we please leave politics out of her birthday project?! we’re inundated with politics 24/7 right now and it would be nice to do something without a political focus! let’s focus on an organization that will help ALL women and not just a specific organization that’s supported by a political party or belief geared toward on behalf of one ethnicity. ALL WOMEN no matter what color, nationality or political standing!

  9. MissBailey01 says:

Not to be a nag but Kristen did march for planned parenthood, so I fail to see why it would be too polictical, unless you oppose pp, imho. Kristen had no problem marching so we shouldn’t have a problem to donate in her name. It’s not about any of us, it’s for Kristen, right? And she made it known where she stands on this issue.

    • We are totally for Planned Parenthood, unfortunately not everyone is and we can’t force people to change their beliefs/misunderstandings for this. Many have complained they don’t want anything political. So this is why, IF Planned Parenthood were to win, we would have a second charity for those who want to pay tribute to Kristen to utilize. This way, they too can feel like they are a part of honoring Kristen instead of boycotting.

      • MissBailey01 says:

I have too apologize, in no way was I criticizing the BirthdayProject. I’m sorry if it came across as such. I think you are handling this very fairly. My comment was to the people saying we should leave politics out of it. I agree with Kristen, at this point it’s not being political but humanitarian. If they’d boycott the birthdayproject on the grounds of it being too political, imho, they are not fans, because like I said, Kristen made clear where she stands on the subject. The birthdayproject isn’t supposed to be about making us feel good, it’s contributing something for her birthday, that she would agree with. Or am I wrong in that? But I’m really sorry, if I came off criticizing you, as that was not my intention, at all.

    • Maxie says:

That’s total BS – many people have moral and religious objections to PP, and are not willing to put aside their closely held beliefs because they also happen to be a member of a fandom. And who the hell are you to decide who her fans are or aren’t based on which project they support? And PP is inherently political, so your argument that it only should be considered a humanitarian cause, and therefore, the reason to contribute, is a ridiculous argument. I’ve contributed $1200 over the course of 3 years to her birthday projects, all of which I believed in, too. As a fan, I applaud Kristen for all her sincere beliefs and her active support for those causes she believes in – I have no issue with the fact that she has strong convictions regarding PP – I expect the same respect and consideration.

      • moe says:

I am pro-choice. I do believe every woman has to make a personal choice about abortion. While I am pro-choice, I personally would not have an abortion and would not contribute money to Planned Parenthood or the Global Fund for Women, I have contributed for the last few years, but I can’t in good conscience give money to either organization. I agree with @Maxie good luck/

      • As previously stated, there will be a second charity if either of those are selected. Please review the statement underneath the poll. We will have a second vote for that charity.

      • moe says:

Sorry, I am not trying to be underhanded. I posted as Mac earlier in the year, and under my gmail account as Moe.

  10. grey says:

how about that link that kristen has in her profile on instagram ;;;they are far away from their goal and kristen supports them ;;and it’s a good cause ;;building a school

    • That was given as an option in the “helping others” section of poll #1, but it did not get enough votes.

      • grey says:

i think kristen still has it there because she wants the fans to pay attention to it she is sending a message,,,plz try to convince ppl with it

    • Once again, the winner of Part One was women’s issues. Everyone already had the chance to vote for the cause that had Build On listed, but they chose this cause instead. Everyone is a lot more passionate about the current poll issues.

    • I would like to add that Kristen has marched supporting Planned Parenthood and recently posing for a magazine whose proceeds go to Planned Parenthood, and these are more public than her Instagram. So we would still be supporting something she is passionate about.

  11. Kikka says:

I love the projects for the Kristen ‘s birthday 💜

  12. Maxie says:

I understand what you are trying to do by providing an alternative to a political selection such as Planned Parenthood, but I thought one of the objectives of this yearly project was for Kristens fans to come together as a group with one purpose, not divide the fandom into groups. Whenever you inject politics into a charity project, it will always cause hard feelings on one side. I’m not really feeling this idea of different charities with different purposes, two groups going off on their own. It seems to take away the comradery and specialness of its original purpose. I’ll sit this one out if its Planned Parenthood (and different charities), but wish everyone the best of luck.

    • Ria says:

If alternative charity does happen, it wouldn’t be “two groups going off on their own”
Instead it would be “we helped TWO charities at the same time”

Its really not easy to manage this project. You can never please everyone. Some refused to donate to animals last year too even when its nothing political, each to their own reason/belief.

Why is PP in the voting list in the first place? Because we all can see for ourself how Kristen strongly supports it? And it’s HER birthday now not yours or mine? I’m sure if PP was left out in the options there will be another group of people who’d argue abt it.

I too donated over $1k in the past towards her birthday (higher amount on the charity I favor, less on those I do not) but I joined every year nonetheless.

Not an American here, both political and religious issue don’t bother me, PP wouldn’t benefits me in anyway but should it gets chosen and we really be doing two charities this year, I’ll welcome and support both, because its for Kristen.

    • Mona says:

I don’t understand why the need to protest this much here. You don’t want to support PP, you find it political? Fine, vote for other option. If your option loses, you have a choice to support the winner or remove yourself completely from this project. No one is forcing anyone to do anything here. But calling people who support PP and their believes BS, won’t help erase that divide in the fandom you are complaining about. You don’t respect them so why would they respect your opinions and wishes in return? PP is an option because Kristen herself supports it, not because people behind this project want it to be that way.
Those different groups of fans you mentioned are not a new thing: may I remind you that quite a few people denied their support to last year’s charity? When helping animals turns out to be a divisive thing, Kristen’s birthday project isn’t what’s causing it – it’s simply a sign of a fandom with deep issues. If, for example, one of LGBTQA charities was to be set as this, or any other, year’s final choice, half of those “fans” wouldn’t even touch it. Supporting women in the industry also makes some fans mad. Fandom basically has issues with every cause Kristen supports.
So you can participate if you want, you are also free to not contribute if you don’t want to but, please, don’t call people who are trying to organize all of this, or those who do support it, and all of their efforts BS. And don’t blame birthday project for the mess this fandom is in.

  13. Jas says:

I hope the Global Fund for Women wins because I don’t think we’re going to make that much money for Planned Parenthood. Also, there’s already a ton of people donating to that right now.

  14. Debbie says:

How about helping animals again? Look at the good we did last year with the Lange Foundation. Honestly I too am sick of anything political. Just a thought.

  15. BrendaStar says:

I find it sad and ironic that this fandom would celebrate a birthday by donating to Planned Parenthood. Lots of lives were ended by abortions performed at PP clinics. These lives never had a birthday. I totally am no longer a member of this fandom.

    • No one can change your opinion or force you to donate t something you don’t believe in. Planned Parenthood is about much more than what you are talking about, but I won’t preach you on the subject because I know it won’t change anything. Hopefully all of the fans who participate will respect your right to your beliefs as you respect theirs.

We will be having a second charity for those who do not want to give to Planned Parenthood. We don’t want anyone to feel ostracized from the fandom. This is about Kristen and the fans honoring her for her birthday and Planned Parenthood is something she has shown public support for.

  16. siana says:

I’m for the The Tegan and Sara Foundation. Lets support LGBTQ girls and women. Let’s help fighting for LGBTQ and women’s rights! I think Kristen would fully agree.

  17. Judy Blue says:

I chose Global Fund for women because while I support PP, I would like to see our dollars go towards helping women world wide. We are so very lucky in this country, and many of our sisters in the far corners of the globe do not have the voice we do. When we empower all women we empower ourselves. The emotional, social, and political impact can be greater than we may ever know.

  18. Nicole Plaza says:

ASPCA leading? Really? No shade. I donate to them and rescued my dog from them. However for those so pro-life, kinda “funny” you are supporting a kill site.
